Hummingbird Feeder Wars

It all started innocently enough. I noticed all the pretty hummingbirds around the house and figured they would appreciate a feeder filled with sweet nectar to satisfy their thirst.

I strategically located it in front of my dining room window, so I could observe. It didn’t take long before the small ruby-throated hummers were buzzing about the feeder, two and three at a time. Delightful!

Then he showed up. Larger than the other hummers, he sits in the pine tree and guards the new feeder with dive-bomber accuracy. He’s brown and not as appealing as the ruby-throated variety. I wonder what he might be and search the internet. Of course…. Rufous.

I learn he’s ‘feisty’. That’s accurate. I also learn he’s ‘the most widely-distributed hummingbird in North America.’

For now, he’s controlling the feeder, but the smaller ones seem to be organizing. Two or three will dive in and lead him on a chase. While away, one or two challengers will dart in for a quick drink.

I love bird feeder drama.
